The Business Page

Welcome to the business page, a blog where I'll take you behind the scenes of greater Rochester's fast-changing economy. My name is Ben Rand, and I intend to introduce you to some of the personalities, concepts and events that make news in business here. I've been a business reporter for eight years in Rochester and a journalist for 18, working in four states. I grew up in Pittsford, but moved away after college for about a decade. My wife and I live in Irondequoit with our two children.

Kodak Reports

Kodak is out with its fourth-quarter and year-end earnings, and the phrase of the day is "in the black." The company posted a small profit during October, November and December - the first in many quarters. But the net earnings $16 million represent a significant turnaround of $62 million turnaround. (Kodak lost $46 million in the fourth quarter of 2005.) Have a look at the release directly. One thing to note is that much of the turnaround has to do with diminished restructuring costs compared to a year ago. What this means is, to use a cliche, the rubber is about to meet the road: The company is going to have to show the ability to grow with the businesses it has in hand. Here's one more version from the financial wires, from Reuters.

Yes, this is good news. However, the size of Kodak is so small now, it's really a sad piece of what it once was... I sure wish Rochester had some new big employers coming in to take the place of Kodak and provide much-needed job growth and economic development.
