The Business Page

Welcome to the business page, a blog where I'll take you behind the scenes of greater Rochester's fast-changing economy. My name is Ben Rand, and I intend to introduce you to some of the personalities, concepts and events that make news in business here. I've been a business reporter for eight years in Rochester and a journalist for 18, working in four states. I grew up in Pittsford, but moved away after college for about a decade. My wife and I live in Irondequoit with our two children.

Getting back on track this cold Monday with some good and interesting business reads:

  • A story of local interest, to start. Eastman Kodak Co. is doing some rejuggling of its approach to sponsoring race cars. The company will now have its name and colors on cars in three different series. Here's a photo of one of the new cars:

  • Speaking of Kodak -- two information organizations have discovered that the ubiquitous nature of camera phones can benefit them in new ways. Welcome to the world of citizen photojournalism (and maybe say goodbye to privacy.) (NY Times)
  • Wish I could have been on this McDonald's management meeting, when someone suggested this particular market as a growth opportunity: Children's Hospitals! (AP, via the Chicago Tribune.)
  • Can't resist a headline that reads, "The Bill Gates of China." Expect to start seeing more deals for lower cost Lenovo personal computers. (Business Week.)
  • Here's an inside look at one of the anti-Wal Mart campaigns making life tough for the nation's largest retailer. (Fortune Magazine.)
