The Business Page

Welcome to the business page, a blog where I'll take you behind the scenes of greater Rochester's fast-changing economy. My name is Ben Rand, and I intend to introduce you to some of the personalities, concepts and events that make news in business here. I've been a business reporter for eight years in Rochester and a journalist for 18, working in four states. I grew up in Pittsford, but moved away after college for about a decade. My wife and I live in Irondequoit with our two children.

Monday Must Reads

Starting the week again with some business stories worth checking out:

  • Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is starting to make the rounds again, more than a year after she was dismissed from the company. No wonder: She's got a memoir to sell. She gave a speech to book publishers recently in which she invoked the name of Eastman Kodak. (Business Week.)
  • One of the subjects that seems to stir up readers these days is the notion that Ethanol may be a solution to our gas price woes. Upstate New York is attracting serious investors to brew the fuel here. Here's a look at some common conceptions the corn-derived fuel. (Business Week.)
  • Speaking of environmental matters, former President Bill Clinton weighed in over the weekend on how one particular industry could help -- the shopping center industry. (Denver Post.)
  • Not that the federal government has distinguished itself of late with its ability to predict, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is out with its forecast for the summer hurricane season. (Dallas Morning News.)
  • It's not just Buffalo that is grappling with issues surrounding the expansion of gambling. The addition of slots in Pennsylvania apparently has casino operators in Atlantic City all geared up. (Philadelphia Inquirer.)
